Taxodium was named by Richard (1810). It is extant. It is the type genus of Taxodioideae.
It was assigned to Taxodieae by Knowlton (1919) and Knowlton (1926); to Taxodiaceae by Hueber (1983), Liu et al. (1996) and Mabberley (2000); and to Taxodioideae by Gadek et al. (2000) and Ahuja and Neale (2002).
