Lycopodiales was named by Dumortier (1829) [Kenrick and Crane 1997 give this as "Lycopodiales" in quotation marks.]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Lycopsida by Kenrick and Crane (1997); and to Lycophyta by Taylor et al. (2008).
