Isoetales was named by Prantl (1874). It is extant. It is considered to be a form taxon.

It was assigned to Lycopsida by Hickey (1977), Lapasha and Miller (1985) and Kenrick and Crane (1997); and to Lycophyta by Taylor et al. (2008).
