Psilophyton was named by Dawson (1859). It is not extant. Its type is Psilophyton princeps.

It was assigned to Psilophytales by Andrews (1970); to Euphyllophytina by Kenrick and Crane (1997); and to Psilophytaceae by Doweld (2001).
