Glyptostrobus was named by Endlicher (1847). It is extant.

It was reranked as Taxodium (Glyptostrobus) by Fontaine (1890).

It was assigned to Taxodium by Fontaine (1890); to Taxodieae by Knowlton (1919); to Taxodiaceae by Christophel (1976), Hickey (1977), McIver and Basinger (1993) and Liu et al. (1996); and to Taxodioideae by Gadek et al. (2000) and Ahuja and Neale (2002).
