Carya antiquorum was named by Newberry (1868) [Carya antiquorum Newberry, 1868, p. 72. 1898, p. 35, Pl. 31, figs. 1-4.]. It is not extant.

It was recombined as Hicoria antiquora by Knowlton (1898) and Knowlton (1919).
