Paranymphaea was named by Berry (1935). It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Paranymphaea crassifolia.

It was assigned to Nymphaeaceae by Berry (1937), Andrews (1970) and Hickey (1977); and to Polygonaceae by McIver and Basinger (1993).
