Kakisaphyllum was named by McLean and Pedder (1984) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras-u Sepkoski's reference number: 165,680]. Its type is Kakisaphyllum larus.

It was assigned to Kakisaphyllinae by McLean and Pedder (1984); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
