Winteraceae was named by Lindley (1830). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Chase and Reveal (2009).

It was assigned to Illiciales by Mabberley (2000); and to Canellales by Taylor et al. (2008), Chase and Reveal (2009) and The Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (2016).
