Taxonomy
Prohegetotherium sculptum was named by Ameghino (1897). Its type specimen is MACN A 52-443, a maxilla, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Deseadan of Patagonia, which is in a Deseadan terrestrial horizon in the Sarmiento Formation of Argentina. It is the type species of Prohegetotherium.

than P. schiaffinoi and similar in size to H. mirabile. Dentition complete and closed. Lower incisors (i2-i3) and canine not re- duced. Symphysis more robust than P. schiaffinoi and S. alti- planense, with posterior end at the level of p3. Talonid of m3 longer than in P. schiaffinoi, but shorter than in S. altiplanense
