Cocculus was named by de Candolle (1817). It is extant. Its type is Cocculus lottii.

It was assigned to Cocculinae by Chandler (1964); and to Menispermaceae by Knowlton (1919), Hickey (1977), Liu et al. (1996) and Prasad (2008).
