Lambeophyllum was named by Okulitch (1938). Its type is Streptelasma profundum.

It was assigned to Streptelasmidae by Kaljo (1956); to Metriophyllidae by Hill (1956); to Lambelasmatinae by Hill (1981); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
