Lithostrotionella was named by Yabe and Hayasaka (1915) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-l C Serp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 163]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Lithostrotion (Lithostrotionella) by Easton (1960).

It was assigned to Lonsdaleiinae by Hill (1956); to Lithostrotion by Easton (1960); to Petalaxidae by Hill (1981); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
