Nyssidium was named by Heer (1870). It is not extant. Its type is Nyssidium ekmani.

It was assigned to Cornaceae by Knowlton (1919); to Araliaceae by Andrews (1970); and to Cercidiphyllaceae by McIver and Basinger (1993).
