Credneria was named by Zenker (1833). It is not extant. Its type is Credneria integerrima.

It was assigned to Credneriaceae by Knowlton (1899); to Angiospermae by Andrews (1970); and to Platanaceae by Knowlton (1919) and Liu et al. (1996).
