Equisetum montanense was named by Fontaine (1898). It is not extant. Its type specimen is MPM No. 935.

It was synonymized subjectively with Equisetum phillipsii by Knowlton (1919); it was misspelled as Equisetum montanensis by Lapasha and Miller (1985).
