Ginkgo wintonensis was named by McLoughlin et al. (1995). Its type specimen is L717: QMF32478. Its type locality is Eromanga Basin L717, which is in a Cenomanian/Turonian fluvial siltstone/sandstone in the Winton Formation of Australia.
