Merlewoodia was named by Pickett (1967) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-l C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 957]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Aphrophyllidae by Hill (1981); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
