Densinervum kaulii was named by Upchurch and Dilcher (1990). Its type specimen is 15713-4841A, 4841A" (part and counterpart). Its type locality is Rose Creek Locality, which is in a Cenomanian/Cenomanian fluvial claystone/sandstone in the Dakota Formation of Nebraska. It is the type species of Densinervum.
