Mesophyllum was named by Schlüter (1889) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l D Give-u Sepkoski's reference number: 422]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Digonophyllinae by Hill (1956) and Merriam (1974); to Digonophyllidae by Hill (1981); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
