Dicotylophyllum myrtophylloides was named by Upchurch and Dilcher (1990). Its type specimen is 15713-8303. Its type locality is Rose Creek Locality, which is in a Cenomanian/Cenomanian fluvial claystone/sandstone in the Dakota Formation of Nebraska.
