Taxonomy
Amia was named by Linnaeus (1766). It is extant. Its type is Melvius thomasi. It is the type genus of Amioidea, Amiinae.
It was assigned to Cycloganoidei by Leidy (1873); to Halecomorphi by Cope (1891); to Amiinae by Grande and Bemis (1998); and to Amiidae by Woodward (1895), Hay (1902), Lambe (1908), Estes and Tihen (1964), Estes and Berberian (1970), Estes (1976), Armstrong-Ziegler (1978), Weems (1999), Bogan et al. (2010) and Carnevale and Godfrey (2018).
