Sphaerotholus edmontonensis

Taxonomy
Troodon edmontonensis was named by Brown and Schlaikjer (1943). Its type specimen is NMC, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Big Valley Creek, which is in a Campanian/Maastrichtian terrestrial horizon in Canada.

It was recombined as Stegoceras edmontonensis by Kuhn (1964), Russell and Chamney (1967), Galton (1971), Wall and Galton (1979), Currie (2000) and Maryanska et al. (2004); it was recombined as Stegoceras edmontonense by Giffin (1989), Maryanska (1990), Olshevsky and Ford (1994) and Eberth (1997); it was recombined as Prenocephale edmontonensis by Sullivan (2000), Sullivan (2003), Sullivan (2006), Schott et al. (2009) and Watabe et al. (2011); it was recombined as Sphaerotholus edmontonense by Longrich et al. (2010), Mallon et al. (2015) and Schott and Evans (2017); it was misspelled as Stegoceras edmontonense by Sues and Galton (1987); it was considered a nomen dubium by Williamson and Carr (2003); it was recombined as Sphaerotholus edmontonensis by Woodruff et al. (2021).

Woodruff et al. 2021Small pachycephalosaurine pachycephalosaurid united within the Sphaerotholus clade by: dorsal margins of postorbital and posterior supraorbital sutures dorsally arched with distinct dividing diastema (Character 33), parietosquamosal bar steeply sloped at ventrolateral angle in caudal view (Character 35), parietosquamosal bar shallows laterally (Character 36), possesses a parietosquamosal node (Character 42). Distinguishing characteristics include: anteroposterior length of the postorbital and anterior supraorbital are relatively longer than that of S. buchholtzae, peripheral element sutural contacts that proportionally vary compared to equivalent sized S. buchholtzae (height of the nasal contact, height of the prefrontal and anterior supraorbital contact, thickness of the frontoparietal, length of the posterior supraorbital, length of the postorbital, width between the nasal and prefrontal contact, and width between the posterior contacts of the parietal), a convex peripheral element profile (prefrontal–squamosal), and a rectangular posterior parietal process compared to equivalently sized S. buchholtzae.
