Lophophaena was named by Ehrenberg (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo R]. It is extant. Its type is Lophophaena galea. It is the type genus of Lophophaenidae.

It was assigned to Lophophaenidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Nassellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
