Avalonianus was named by Kuhn (1961). Its type is Avalonia sanfordi.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Galton (1998) and Naish and Martill (2007).

It was assigned to Saurischia by Kuhn (1964); and to Melanorosauridae by Charig (1967), Steel (1970) and Anderson and Cruickshank (1978).
