Taxonomy
Basutodon was named by Huene (1932). Its type is Basutodon ferox.

It was synonymized subjectively with Orosaurus by Romer (1956) and Tatarinov (1964); it was synonymized subjectively with Euskelosaurus by Romer (1966); it was considered a nomen dubium by Heerden (1979); it was considered a nomen dubium by Knoll (2004).

It was assigned to Carnosauria by Kuhn (1939); to Ornithosuchidae by Steel (1970); to Rauisuchia by Kitching and Raath (1984); and to Teratosauridae by Battail (1986).
