Taxonomy
Phthartus africanus was named by Haughton (1924). Its type specimen is SAM 5732, a nymph, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Siberia, Wodehouse, which is in a Sinemurian terrestrial shale in the Clarens Formation of South Africa.
