Taxonomy
Gyposaurus was named by Broom (1911). Its type is Gyposaurus capensis.

It was synonymized subjectively with Anchisaurus by Galton and Cluver (1976) and Dong (1997); it was synonymized subjectively with Massospondylus by Cooper (1981); it was synonymized subjectively with Lufengosaurus by Evans and Milner (1989); it was considered a nomen dubium by Galton and Upchurch (2004).

It was assigned to Theropoda by Broom (1913); to Saurischia by Huene (1940); to Prosauropoda by Young (1941); to Prosauropoda by Kuhn (1939), Huene (1958) and Simmons (1965); to Thecodontosauridae by Huene (1914), Haughton (1924), Nopcsa (1928), Haughton and Brink (1954), Romer (1956), Huene (1959), Tatarinov (1964), Romer (1966) and Charig (1967); and to Anchisauridae by Van Hoepen (1920), Steel (1970), Galton (1973), Upchurch et al. (2007) and Martínez (2009).
