Stephanomys stadii was named by Mein and Michaux (1979). Its type specimen is FSL 65626, a left M1/, a tooth. Its type locality is Cucuron, at the stadium, sample taken between 1972 and 1976, which is in a MN 12 lacustrine claystone/lignite in the Ravin de Ratavoux Formation of France.
