Taxonomy
Gorgonops torvus was named by Owen (1876). Its type specimen is BMNH R 1647, a partial skull (Incomplete and flattened skull), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Mildenhalls, which is in a Wuchiapingian terrestrial horizon in South Africa.
