Pristerognathus platyrhinus was named by Broom (1912). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Grootfontein, Beaufort West, which is in a Capitanian terrestrial horizon in South Africa.
It was recombined as Cynariognathus platyrhinus by Broom (1931).
