Nothophyllum was named by Wu (1987) [Sepkoski's age data: P Asse Sepkoski's reference number: 1240]. Its type is Nothophyllum liuzhaiense.

It was assigned to Geyerophyllidae by Wu (1987); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
