Phyllophaga was named by Owen (1842) [McKenna and Bell (1997) rank Phyllophaga as a Suborder.]. It is extant.

It was reranked as the unranked clade Phyllophaga by McKenna et al. (2006); it was reranked as the order Phyllophaga by Kramarz et al. (2010).

It was assigned to Xenarthra by McDonald and Muizon (2002) and Muizon et al. (2004); to Xenarthra by McKenna et al. (2006); and to Xenarthra by Kramarz et al. (2010).
