Cyathophyllum was named by Goldfuss (1826) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi D Give-u Sepkoski's reference number: 422]. It is not extant. Its type is Cyathophyllum dianthus.

It was assigned to Zaphrentidae by Hill (1956); to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cyathophyllidae by Dana (1846) and Pedder (2004).
