It was recombined as Cyclotosaurus stantonensis by Zittel (1911) and Welles and Cosgriff (1965); it was recombined as Procyclotosaurus stantonensis by Watson (1958); it was recombined as Stenotosaurus stantonensis by Damiani (2001).

Watson 1958||"C. stantonensis differs very greatly in the persistence in it of the post-tympanic flange of the pterygoid found in "Capitiosarus" (=Parotosaurus) and in the proportions of the tympanic cavity so far as it can be inferred. It retains more of the structure and proportions of this region in Parotosaurus, and appears to be a "primitive" form, not necessarily closely related to other cyclotosaurs and I therefore establish for it a new genus, Procyclotosaurus."|
