Atlascopcosaurus was named by Rich and Vickers-Rich (1989). Its type is Atlascopcosaurus loadsi.
It was considered a nomen dubium by Agnolin et al. (2010).
It was assigned to Euornithopoda by Norman et al. (2004) and Galton (2009); to Hypsilophodontidae by Rich and Vickers-Rich (1989), Sues and Norman (1990), Molnar (1991), Molnar (1992), Rich and Vickers-Rich (1994), Sues (1997), Hocknull and Cook (2008) and Alifanov and Saveliev (2014); to Elasmaria by Madzia et al. (2018); and to Ornithopoda by Duncan et al. (2021).
