Palaeocyclus was named by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov-u S Wenl-l]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Tryplasmatidae by Merriam (1973); to Palaeocyclidae by Hill (1981); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).

C. W. Merriam 1973Small discoid tryplasmid rugose corals with flat to slightly patellate epithecal base having a small central cone and concentric incremental rings. Thick beaded septa with free, broadly convex peripheral edges; distal margins of major septa gradually sloping toward bottom of deep calicular pit. Minor septa commonly more than one-half the length of major septa. No fossula, tabulae, or dissepiments. Septal pattern distinctly radial.
