Taxonomy
Palaeosmilia was named by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1848) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-u C Bash-l Sepkoski's reference number: 163,680]. It is not extant. Its type is Palaeosmilia murchisoni. It is the type genus of Palaeosmiliidae, Palaeosmiliinae.

It was assigned to Amygdalophyllinae by Hill (1956); to Palaeosmiliidae by Hill (1981); to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Palaeosmiliinae by Somerville et al. (2016).
