Murchisonia serrulata was named by Salter (1859). Its type specimen is GSC.
It was recombined as Lophospira serrulatus by Allen and Lester (1957); it was misspelled as Lophospira serratula by Sloan and Webers (1987); it was recombined as Lophospira serrulata by Ulrich and Scofield (1897), Bassler (1909), Knight and Bridge (1944), Wilson (1951), Liberty (1969), Steele and Sinclair (1971), Tofel and Bretsky (1987), Wagner (1995), Peel and Gubanov (1997), Wagner (1999) and Wagner (2023).
