Archaeohyrax propheticus was named by Ameghino (1897). Its type specimen is MACN A52-618, symphysis and portion of right horizontal ramus bearing right i1-2, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Archaeotypotherium propheticus by Croft (2000).
