Taxonomy
Plateosaurus erlenbergiensis was named by Huene (1905). Its type specimen is SMNS 6014, a partial skeleton (a partial skull and part of the skeleton including several vertebrae, partial pectoral girdle and forelimb, partial ilium, ischium, and most of the hindlimb ele), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Bl. 7220, Erlenberg, which is in a Rhaetian terrestrial marl in the Trossingen Formation of Germany.

It was corrected as Plateosaurus erlenbergensis by Schmidt (1938); it was synonymized subjectively with Plateosaurus engelhardti by Galton (1984) and Galton (1985); it was considered a nomen dubium by Galton (2001), Galton (2001) and Galton and Upchurch (2004).
