Taxonomy
Scopus gibbosus was named by Benecke (1976). Its type specimen is N-Lk 316 a and b, (PB 026) a and b. Its type locality is Loskop, which is in a Changhsingian delta plain shale in South Africa. It is the type species of Scopus.
