Plumsteadia was named by Rigby (1962). It is not extant. Its type is Plumsteadia microsacca.

It was assigned to Glossopteridaceae by Andrews (1970); to Glossopteridopsida by Lakhanpal et al. (1976); and to Glossopteridales by Chandra and Tewari (1991).
