Eosphargis was named by Lydekker (1889) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Allopleuroninae by Weems (1988); to Chelonia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dermochelyidae by Lydekker (1889), Carroll (1988), Hirayama (1995), Joyce et al. (2004) and Weems (2014).
