Spirifera murchisoni was named by Castelneau (1843).

It was recombined as Spirifer murchisoni by de Castelnau (1843) and Williams and Breger (1916); it was recombined as Acrospirifer murchisoni by Cooper (1944) and Johnson (1970); it was recombined as Hysterolites (Acrospirifer) murchisoni by Amsden and Ventress (1963); it was recombined as Patriaspirifer murchisoni by Johnson (1995).
