Taxonomy
Ceratodus americanus was named by Knight (1898). Its type specimen is UWM 2001b, a tooth (left mandibular tooth), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was synonymized subjectively with Ceratodus guentheri by Kirkland (1987).
