Parasaniwidae was named by Estes (1964). Its type is Parasaniwa.

It was synonymized subjectively with Necrosauridae by Alifanov (2000).

It was assigned to Diploglossa by Estes and Berberian (1970); and to Varanoidea by Estes (1964), Kuhn (1966), Seiffert (1975) and Yadagiri (1986).
