Pterinea orbicularis was named by Emmons (1842). It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Ambonychia orbicularis by Hall (1847) and Soot-Ryen and Soot-Ryen (1960); it was recombined as Ambonychiopsis orbicularis by Pojeta (1966).
