Plerodiffia was named by Fedorowski (1985) [Sepkoski's age data: P Sakm]. Its type is Plerodiffia eaglebuttensis. It is the type genus of Plerodiffiidae.

It was assigned to Plerodiffiidae by Fedorowski (1985); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
