Sphaerodoma was named by Keyes (1889). It is the type genus of Sphaerodomidae.
It was reranked as Macrochilina (Sphaerodoma) by Reed (1944); it was synonymized subjectively with Ianthinopsis by Knight et al. (1960); it was synonymized subjectively with Strobeus by Harper (1981).
It was assigned to Macrochilina by Reed (1944); to Strobeidae by Bandel (2002); to Soleniscidae by Pan and Erwin (2002); and to Sphaerodomidae by Bouchet et al. (2005).
